We managed to spend a break in Malta last week, it was a welcome break, and now I am back home. Read on to find out more.

Carol's Blog about Malta

We have been to Malta twice before, done lots of sight seeing, so we knew what to expect. This time we wanted a rest. It's been hectic for both of us lately, so we planned to swim and laze at the pool, go for walks, and bus trips, and if there was any spare time, read and also in my case, do a bit of writing.

We checked on the internet what temperatures we could expect, and as it was only showing 20 degrees, we wondered if it would be warm enough to sun bathe. I had made up my mind I would use the outdoor pool, which opens in May, come what may, but hanging about afterwards might not be an option.

The pool at our hotel overlooks the bay of St Pauls. It has a beautiful panoramic view, the sea always glistens, and is so blue. And the view from our apartment is one way looking out to sea, and the other way over rolling hills and countryside.

We arrived

Our plane took off very early in the morning, and I don't recommend it if you have a choice of flights. We couldn't sleep the night before, and had to get up at 3am, then drive for 2 hours to the airport, then huddle in our fleeces waiting for the bus that takes you from the car park to the terminal.

Of course when we arrived in Malta, the weather forecast had been totally wrong, although it was only mid morning, the temperatures had soared to a respectable 27 degrees, and we were grossly overdressed, and arrived at our hotel very hot and weary.

An afternoon nap followed by a shower soon took care of that, and then we went out for the evening into Buggiba, where there are so many restaurants to take your pick of. The food is inexpensive and delicious, and as I love fish, during the week I was able to try many different varieties.

Our week passed quickly

So we spent a very lazy holiday, mostly swimming, sun bathing, eating and drinking. Maltese wine is very inexpensive, and very nice. We decided to hire a car for 2 days, as the buses always tended to be late, or not come at all.

We visited Golden Bay, which is exactly as it sounds, so beautiful, the sea shines in the sun, and the golden sand is soft beneath your feet. We enjoyed a swim there, and that day it was very busy, with lots of holidaymakers.

We returned to Golden Bay on the bus on Sunday, to watch the grand prix in the beach bar there, it also happened to be Mother's Day. They decided to cut the bus out that day, so we had to go the long way round, taking another bus, and reaching our hotel after about 2 hours, whilst only travelling about 6 miles.

Next time we go, we are having a car all the week. it's not that expensive, and the freedom it gives you to go anywhere, and come back when you want, is so worth it. Malta is a beautiful island, with very interesting ancient architecture. The people are relaxed and friendly, and most speak English. Two more bonuses are, they drive on the left as we do, and also they have the same three point plugs.

Quite a few Brits have gone to live out there, but the one thing I would miss are the open fields, and parks to walk your dog. There is almost no grass in Malta because there is not enough rainfall. However, if you are looking for a nice holiday with almost guaranteed good weather, then you can't go wrong. Malta would be a good choice.

I will go back to Porto Azurro

Happy for you Carol that you enjoyed this well deserved holiday in the sun. I know you cannot relocate there however nice the place is though some have like Alan Knott the former Kent and England cricketer who now lives in Cyprus and should be enjoying the warmer climate - siva

At times, temperatures on Internet are highly off the mark. It is better to do a more thorough research. Great Pics and you surely had a great time in Malta.
