My trip to Cancun was just wonderful - hotel was right on the beach, the sun was warm and the drinks were cold. What is not to like?

Cancun

My husband and I needed a vacation badly - but could our budget afford it? I checked around and found an Apple Vacation trip for us - to Cancun, Mexico. Plane and hotel included at not a bad price. We paid. Off to the airport early for a 5:00 am flight - but we were in Cancun by lunch time. I don't have a problem with that. The hotel was right on the beach and lovely - room clean and looked out over the beach. I put on my bathing suit and off to the beach I went. No waves - just a calm beautiful ocean. Actually the Gulf of Mexico. The beach had lounge chairs, thatched roofs to sit under to protect you from the hot sun, and a bar by the pool. Off in the distance we could see the Isle Mejeres.

We decided not to visit the pyramids but, instead, took a trip to Tulum. Tulum is located south of Cancun - again, right on the Gulf. Several ruins are there as well as several pyramids overlooking the water. It was truly a beautiful sight. On the way back we stopped at a grotto to swim with the fish - it was very crowded but it was a beautiful spot. It's a shame we had to share it with so many people.

We also took a side trip to Cozumel but be warned there is not much there to see. Lovely beaches and hotels right on the water. The town of Cozumel had a huge square with a lot of chickens pecking their way around the dirt. And you had to book your flight back to Cancun as soon as you landed. I would skip Cozumel if I were you.

Getting back to Cancun - the town of Cancun is about a 30 minute walk into the town. I saw my first and only roadrunner while taking this walk. A cute little bird. He zoomed away quickly. The actual town of Cancun has a few restaurants and tourist shops but, again, not worth walking the 30 minutes there and then 30 minutes back. I wouldn't go there in the dark, either.

So, for the most part we stayed near the hotel and enjoyed the beaches and the restaurants right on the water. If you enjoy sun, surf, and snorkeling, then Cancun can be a great winter get-away. Just hang out by the hotel!
