Birkenhead House, Hermanus

I can unequivocally say that Birkenhead House is the most luxurious, glamourous establishment in which I have ever had the pleasure to stay.

The hotel

The building itself was once a custom built holiday home, which was converted into the boutique hotel that now sits proudly on a cliff overlooking the bay of Hermanus, just a few hours drive east of Cape Town.

As soon as you enter the hotel, a feeling of relaxed quality rolls over you. The staff are obviously hand picked, the decor is cool and sophisticated, and the location is mind blowing. Walking from the entrance, through a beautiful courtyard pool area into the lounge area at the front of the building you are hit by a 180 degree vista of blue sea and sky. Floor to ceiling windows open out onto a terrace, past which the famous whales of Hermanus loll in the sea.

Our room was one of only 2 at the front of the hotel, so we had the joy of that fabulous view on our private balcony. Every romantic gesture had made on our arrival - champagne was chilling, and dozens of fresh flowers and petals had been laid out on the bed and the floor forming beautiful patterns.

Birkenhead House must hire a crack team of magic cleaning pixies. We never saw any cleaning staff, but each time we arrived back at our room beds were made, rooms tidied, hot baths run. Even our laundry arrived back in a wicker basket, wrapped in pink chiffon and tied with a silk bow.

The food and drink

Our stay was all-inclusive, and at Birkenhead House that includes all local wines. The meals are all served in the dining area with fine views of the sea, and breakfast gave the option of eating on the terrace. Lunch was a 3-course meal, dinner 4-courses. Each day the menu offered new and delightful local treats, and the knowledegable service staff recommended excellent wines with each course.

We were also offered a choice of cocktails in the lounge before dinner, sitting by a roaring fire with a fabulous range of books to back up the conversation. Back in the room, the contents of a full and superb wine list were just a phone call away.

One day we asked for a hamper, to take on a cliff top walk. Suffice to say, the picnic Birkenhead house provided was exquisite. We were even give 2 bottles of chilled wine, a generous if slightly dangerous amount for a couple walking along a cliff!

Birkenhead House is in a different league to any other establishment I've visited. Small and intimate, but with plenty of character, style and hospitality, I'd recommend it without question to anybody wanting a touch of luxury in South Africa.
