Temple of tooth.

The sacred temple of tooth is one of the major tourist attraction in Kandy in Sri Lanka. It is really beautiful.

Sridalada Maligawa.

In the Sri Lankan language Sridalada Maligawa is the name by which the sacred temple of tooth is called.


The entire site is very very beautiful. There is a beautiful lake in the vicinity. The temple looks white in colour.

Entry fees.

There are huge entry fees in respect of temple of tooth. In Sri Lankan currency tourists are supposed to pay more than Rs 750 each to enter the temple.


Shoes are supposed to kept outside the temple. Charges are paid at the counter where they are kept and then the pilgrims enter the temple.


Monks of two chapters called Malwatte and Asgiriya conduct worship within the Temple every day in Temple of Tooth, Kandy.

Parinirvana of Lord Buddha.

After the parinirvana of Lord Buddha, the tooth relic was preserved in Kalinga and smuggled to the island by Princess Hemamali and her husband Prince Dantha on the instructions of father King Guhasiva.


They landed in the island in Lankapattana during the reign of King Kirti Sri Meghavarna during 321 to 328 BC and handed over the tooth relic.


During the reign of King Dharmapala the relic was kept hidden in Delgamuwa Vihara, Ratnapura in a grinding stone


The white colour is the colour of peace. So white clad temples and other structure give a very pious view of the site.

King Vimaladharmasurya I.

King Vimaladharmasurya I built a two storey building to deposit the tooth relic and the building cannot be traced back.

Connecting temples.

There are connecting temples in the same premises having slanting roofs and having Pagoda type structures. The architecture is attractive.

Golden caskets.

The tooth relic is encased in 7 golden caskets which are engraved with precious gemstones. It is considered pious for the Buddhists.

Temple of tooth.

Many visitors sit in the gallery to offer puja with flowers in the Buddha temple. Visitors get peace by sitting in the temple.


If visitors get an opportunity to visit Kandy, they should always visit the temple of the tooth because of peace of mind.

The temple is very well maintained in Kandy.
