Where do you live? What is there to see and do in your area? What do you like about where you live? What are the hidden gems for tourists to see in your area? Be a travel guide to your home town.

Tell Wikinut Readers Where You Live

Sometimes Wikinut writers are stuck for ideas on what to write about. Why not write about where you live? You might not think of your area as a tourist destination, but every area has some little things of interest.

I love to travel but have not been able to do so for a little while. The next best thing to traveling is reading about great destinations. I one time read a travel article about a place I had been but as I was reading I was thinking to myself "Has the writer ever even been there?". The article was so poorly written that I really think it was written by somebody visiting Wikipedia and not visiting the destination they were talking about.

What to Write in a Travel Guide Article

Readers want to know all about a destination. You need to say where it is you are talking about, include the name of the city, province/state, and country. Do not assume readers know where a city is. For example if I was going to write about the area I live in I would say "I am near Pigeon Lake, Alberta, a tourist area just over an hour southwest of Alberta's capital city, Edmonton, which is located in central Alberta.".

If your area is not a popular hub tell people how to get there from the popular center (note I said I am southwest of Edmonton, so I would then give directions by saying take Highway 2 south, to Highway 13 west).

Tell people what there is to see and do in your area. This can even be things that are an hour's drive away. You can be as broad as you want, telling about your city, or your entire country!

Tell people about the climate and what time of the year is best to visit.

Tell people the common language, and currency, of your area.

Tell people if it is easy to find accommodations and where are the best places to eat (and what sort of food to expect).

Think about what you like to do, or where you like to go.

Other Things Important to Include in a Travel Article

You absolutely should have at least one photograph in your travel and tourism article. Wikinut allows one photo per section, so ideally you will want to have at least 3 sections, allowing for at least three photos.

Include any warnings, such as bad places that tourists should avoid, or undesirable times of the year to come. Include tips such as "book early if you are coming during certain holidays", or "bartering is not done in this area when shopping except at garage sales".

Do not give out your personal information such as exactly where you live!

Here are a few travel articles I have written based on places I have been with my wife.

Mark this is a wonderful idea. I have in the past written about the town I currently live in (a place on many people's bucket list) but I have thought about writing of cities I used to live in.

Needed tips and guidance Mark. I have not written a travel article. I agree it is unfair to write on any topic without proper knowledge and personal experience - siva

Great idea for writers. I've done travel writing for years and trust me, when you get started, you will find endless ideas! Starting with where you live is ideal, especially for those who are just starting out: write about what you know. Great advice, Mark.

Great idea...I am not one of those who gets so stuck but I am kind of short of time..lol. And actually that is an excuse. I have a 3 and a half year old friend and his little sister who is nearing one..so I want to enjoy their childhood before they get down to being seriously studious kids. lol. But I do agree the idea is good. :)

Excellent idea, Mark. There couldn't have been a better way to popularize the merits of your native city/town on a global scale.
And none can be a better guide than you when it comes to place where you reside in.

Good idea, but at times, I think if people will be interested in - Mall X, or Mall Y or this Road or that Road. Yes, there are places to see where I live, but somehow at times I do not feel enthusiastic in terms of talking about these places. However, I once wrote a personal review of a local restaurant.

Very cool idea! We have live music festivals every Thursday from June through November. Everyone enjoys public drinking and dancing in the streets!

Absolutely brilliant idea, Mark! Never thought of that!

I guess I was lucky all my life to always live in a tourist area whether I lived in Germany, England or now in Spain.

I'm already pulling material together, so I can start writing!

Thank you so much for this tip!

What a great idea. Because I live by the sea with beautiful walks around me I have done that. I used to be a holiday maker here once, and now know it's also a great place to live.

Most towns, cities and places have got enough redeeming features to write about I guess.

Even if we must mention a negative or two along the way, we can indeed paint a positive picture like you have done here Mark.
