Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, and is one of Europe's more exciting destinations. This is a city located on the coast that is a bridging point with the Balearic Islands. The city is located in northeast Spain, to the south of the Pyrenees Mountains. Barcelona is renowned for its inspiring architecture and sandy beaches.

Barcelona For Visitors

Visitors to the city should check out some of the more famous destinations. For example, there is the Sagrada Familia, an incomplete Neo-Gothic church. Even though construction of Gaudi's cathedral continues, a fair amount of the cathedral's structure is in place. Eight of the 12 spirals have been built, and the cathedral also includes a Nativity Facade.

The hill of Montjuic rises some 213 meters above Barcelona's port. Cable cars link the various parts of the hill. At Montjuic there are a variety of galleries, museums and gardens. Among the museums is Montjuic Castle, which includes a military museum that houses various Spanish Civil War artifacts. The National Palace (Palau Nacional) is another fascinating museum which has a great collection of Romanesque frescoes. Also located at Mountjuic is that of Poble Espanyol, which contains replicas of buildings from many regions of Spain.

Barcelona is also Spain's soccer capital, although Madrid fans might state otherwise. It includes one of the most famous European soccer stadiums, that of the Nou Camp, which has almost 100,000 seats for its home games. There Barcelona's star studded teams play their home games, and it's also a venue for the Spanish soccer team. The soccer stadium has a Barcelona FC museum that includes club artifacts and trophies won by their teams.

Barcelona Cathedral is another magnificent building in the city. This is a Gothic cathedral located at the Gothic Quarter. The cathedral includes 28 side chapels, with Baroque altarpieces, that encircle the nave. Also included within the museum are Catalonia paintings.

During the summer months the Barcelona waterfront sparkles. In the summer, Barcelona's climate can eclipse 25 degrees Celsius, approximately 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Barcelona's coast includes a variety of sandy beaches that stretch for miles. Among the more notable are Barceloneta Beach, Sant Sebastià , Bogatell and Mar Bella which have golden sands. Just beyond Barcelona there is also the Costa Brava, or 'Wild Coast,' that has a variety of beach resorts.

Also check out Parc Guell . This garden city encompasses some 20 hectares of estate that mixes architecture with landscaped gardens. The municipal gardens include a variety of Gaudi mosaics and buildings.

Barcelona is a city that has numerous highlights. The Parc Guell, Barcelona Cathedral, Montjuic and Sagrada Familia are a few of its destinations to visit. For further details, check out this Barcelona website.
