Avery Island, Louisiana

Avery Island is located in Iberia Parish in the state of Louisiana. It is located about three miles from Vermilion Bay. A small population of people reside on the island. This island was named after the Avery family which settled the area in the 1830s. This island is a salt dome. The salt dome was discovered by the Native Americans. A sugar plantation was popular on the island around 1818 because of the island’s fertile soil. In 1862 during the American Civil War, a mine of pure rock salt was discovered on the island.

Tobasco sauce production still continues on the island today. This island suffered damage from hurricanes in 2005. Since this time, a 17 foot high levee has been constructed to protect the island from hurricane damage. New pumps and backup generators were installed so that the production of Tobasco sauce could not be disrupted.

Avery Island is known to be a natural paradise because of it’s beautiful exotic plants and animals. Avery Island’s natural landscape is made up of beautiful azaleas, Egyptian payrus, and Japanese camellias. Many rare plants can be found on the island. In 1942, oil was discovered on the island. Open to the public are Jungle Gardens and Bird City.

Avery Island is surrounded on all sides by the bayous, salt marsh, and swampland. Avery Island is located about 140 miles west of New Orleans. The island is only about 2 1/2 miles wide. This island was naturally created from salt deposits that exist beneath the Mississippi Delta Region.

Avery Island is a nice place to visit and it is quite an educational experience. You can always take a bottle of the Tobasco sauce home with you as a token of remembrance.
