An autumn or fall holiday in Central Otago, New Zealand, is a must if you're in New Zealand in April. Apart from offering a diverse range of tourist activities, the autumn beauty at this time of year reflects its gold mining history of the past.

Holidaying in the Far South

Attending a friend's 60th birthday recently took my husband and I into Central Otago, down in the South Island of New Zealand. We were in need of some rest and relaxation and looked forward to our time in the deep south.
Otago, and in particular Central Otago, is renowned for its gold rush days in the 1860s, starting when gold was first discovered in New Zealand at Gabriel's Gully near present day Lawrence in May 1861.
Central Otago is an amazing place, one of the most spectacular tourist spots in New Zealand. It is not only its historic past that brings visitors from far and wide, but it's probably more widely known by the young as one of the world's outdoor pursuit and adventure spots.
Central Otago has extremes of weather, being exceptionally hot in summer and freezing cold in winter. Consequently it is a major fruit growing area and a producer of some of New Zealand's best wines.
As if all this isn't enough, it is also a beautiful place to be, with beautiful lakes, mountains, and rivers. We were lucky during our visit, the weather was kind and we had a relaxing holiday.

Arrowtown in Autumn

Arrowtown is a small one time gold mining centre, about 20 minutes drive from Queenstown and the destination of our first night stop, at Millbrook Resort where the party was being held. We were delighted that the trees in the grounds of Millbrook were starting to show their autumn colours. I should add, we don't usually stay in such luxurious surroundings, but this was for a special occasion, the birthday of our friend. The New Zealand PGA Pro-Am Golf Tournament was also being held nearby while we were there.
Having been in Arrowtown in autumn before, I was hoping the narrow tree lined streets would be displaying the golden colours for which they are famous at this time of year. I was disappinted, we were about a week too early. However, the 1980s postcard image above shows how spectacular the entrance to the town can look.

Beside Lake Hayes

Next day we drove past Lake Hayes, a small but pretty lake on the way back to Queenstown. Although the picture shown here of the autumn trees was taken more than thirty years ago, it still looks as sleepy as this from the road. However, like all Central Otago towns, building development is growing rapidly.
Once a busy gold mining town, it is now the centre of sheep farming country.

Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu

We arrived back in Queenstown around lunch time, to attend the ongoing birthday celebrations. Queenstown is always a busy tourist spot and the golf at Arrowtown, along with a high profile cycling event, had attracted a huge influx of visitors for the weekend.
It isn't that long since we last visited Queenstown, so rather than rush around doing all the usual tourist activities, such as a lake trip on the steamer, Earnslaw, pictured in the centre of the picture here, or a trip on the gondola to admire the view, we decided to relax at our hotel after lunch and enjoy the view.
In this 1980s postcard picture, our hotel isn't there, nor are most of the others along the lake front, but is probably between the autumn coloured poplar trees at left and the Earnslaw. We had a magnificent view and enjoyed the changing colours as the sun faded at the end of the day, as well the early morning colours next day.

Golden Central Otago in New Zealand

No matter what time of the year you visit Central Otago in New Zealand, visitors will never be disappointed. It is a tourist spot accentuated by gold. The history of this old gold mining region, the golden apricots that are the best we grow here, or the golden colours of autumn, all these and more contribute to a beautiful experience.
