Journey up the Maine coast to Arcadia National Park

Bangor, Maine

We set off early from Orleans, Cape Cod, and drove the 322 miles up to Bangor. The early start paid off and we arrived mid afternoon. We drove down to the local mall and treated ourselves to a delicious 'Chilli's' dinner. After dinner we drove through downtown Bangor which was very pretty. It's obviously quite an old town (by American standards) with lots of character, very leafy with large detached houses around a green.

We stopped off at the playground and enjoyed the evening sunshine. There was a really nice atmosphere with locals bringing their kids down after dinner for a play. We drove home along the river which had a beautiful river walk.

Bar Harbour (Maine)

We arrived at Arcadia National Park just after lunch and set off on the loop road to explore the island. We drove along the coastal road taking in the stunning views of the Maine coast line. The rocky shores and forest are just as you would imagine and we were blessed with fantastic weather. The scenary is very reminiscent of the Scotish coast.

We stopped at Otter Point and picked up the Bay Trail walking on the coastal path through woods, down to the rocks and along past Otter Cliffs towards Sand beach. The bay is full of bobbing brightly coloured floats from the lobster pots which combined with the gentle ding of the bell from the offshore bouy really made for a lovely atmosphere.

We took route 3 back to Bar Harbour rather than drive the full loop of the park. We stayed at the Days Inn Bar Harbour which is right by the ferry terminal to Nova Scotia and does have sea views. Worth knowing is that you can use the fabulous pool at the nearby swanky Holiday Inn. Bar Harbour itself is very pretty and bustling with lots of interesting small shops, cafes and restaurants. We found the weather very mixed, varying from scorching to chilly and very foggy, not uncommon even in summer I gather.
