There is an ancient kingdom in my democratic country. How can be?

Ancient Kingdom in my Country

A History
Indonesia is a democratic country. It has more than thirty provinces spread all over its islands. But the most unique thing about this country, along its journey toward democratic country, is many ancient kingdoms as its beginning.

In the 4th century, Indonesia ancient people did a lot of trading activities as their economical basis with some traders from Chinese and India. The relationship amongst these cultures then had an impact of the existence of Taruma Negara empire.

In the 4th to 7th century, there were two other big empires in Indonesia, such as Srivijaya in Aceh province - Sumatera and Majapahit empire in East Java province - Java. even then the Srivijaya empire could conquer Cambodia.

In the 12th century, Islam principles came into the Indonesia land through Sumatera. There after, almost all of kingdoms in Indonesia effected by this religion, such as Samudera Pasai empire in Aceh - Sumatera and Demak empire in Java.

Along with the development of those different empires all over Indonesia areas, people were still depended their economical basis to trading activities. And their mother language was Sanskrit language.

European People Came In
Indonesia was a fertile land, and still it is. This condition made European countries wanted to make business in Indonesia. Then in the year of 1512, Portuguese came to our land. They realized that Indonesia had a good prospect in natural resources. The soil was so fertile. That is why, the Portuguese did not want to leave the country. They then conquered Indonesia from the year of 1512 to 1850.

In 1800 to 1942, Dutch came also into Indonesia. They developed Indonesia physically such as public facilities development, but on the other side they also did trading activities for their own profits.

Japanese Came to the land
Finally, in 1942, Japanese could overtake Dutch from Indonesia land. But, Indonesia people were more suffered under Japanese government. They treated our people badly.

Indonesia Freedom
Only took three years, Japanese then could be overtaken by Indonesia in 1945. And on 17th August 1945, Sukarno (our first President) claimed Indonesia's freedom.

Ancient Kingdom in Modern Life
Although Indonesia is a democratic country, there is still one empire amongst thirty democratic provinces in Indonesia. It is Yogyakarta Empire. This empire is very unique because it is located in a democratic country. Yogyakarta as a province and a kingdom as well, is not led by a governor but it is led by a king. The name of the king is "Sri Sultan" (=Your Majesty) Hamengku Buwono.

The ancient kingdom in a modern democratic country. It is weird, isn't it. But we as Indonesian people, proud of the existence of this kingdom. We want to heritage our culture to our grand grand grand children. Hopefully.
