Explaining to an outsider why the streets of Madrid are so filthy and full of litter everywhere.

A warning to tourists!

Even when Madrid is far from the sea that seems to attract so many tourists, this capital city has its assets worth seeing and knowing. This is the capital city with more bars per square yard. Its dwellers seem not to need too much sleep, because its streets will be in full swing after eleven every night, or almost. It´s a welcoming and open city where nobody will feel an outsider or a foreigner. It´s got one of the most important museums in the world among others lesser known. However, on these days, one will find that its streets, squares, parks and gardens are filthy and neglected.
Oh, why is that? A newcomer may ask. Don´t they clean it every day?
Like every capital city, it´s difficult to keep its streets spotless, but they aren´t usually like this.
They aren´t? So why are they so dirty now?
Oh, it´s because of the public employees´s strike and they plan to be on strike till the Council and the management agree to reach to a decent deal.
Oh, I see...
Madrid´s street cleaners and gardeners are on strike against the company´s plans to make over a thousand employees redundant, reduce their salaries and annual leave, but to increase their work load with less employees.
Good Lord! How much do they get on average?
Many of them won´t get one thousand Euro a month and if they reduce their salaries...
The company also wants to reduce their entitlement to annual leave and they want them to pay for their Social Security stamps by themselves alone. Thus, the company will be free from this duty.
And how long will they stay on strike?
When unions, management and the Council agree to negotiate a fair deal.
So, now you know why Madrid´s streets are filthy.

Wow. Cleaners are essential workers. It's probably more sensible to cut middle management than front line staff. hope the issue gets resolved.
