Travel tips for the Kansas City, Missouri metro area.

Staycation Kansas City

I have two glorious weeks off to spend with my family but I don't want to travel anywhere. In the five years that I've lived in Kansas City, I've only been to a handful of places and so I decided that our family will enjoy a stay-cation right here in metro Kansas City. I'll elaborate on each day but, for reference, below is our itinerary:

Day One: City Hall Observation Deck, Kansas City Public Library
Day Two: Roasterie Tour, "They're Not Going to Get Me: Crime In The 1930's"
Day Three: Kauffman Memorial Garden, Kemper Museum
Day Four: Royals Game and "All Access Tour"
Day Five: Boulevard Tour, First Fridays
Day Six: DeAnna Rose Farmstead, Legends
Day Seven: City Market, Nelson Atkins Museum
Day Eight: Lakeside Nature Center
Day Nine: Union Station, Coterie Theater
Day Ten: Worlds Of Fun / Oceans Of Fun
Day Eleven: Kansas City Zoo
Day Twelve: Kansas City Museum, Limo Tour of Kansas City

Day #1 : Downtown Kansas City

Breakfast: Happy Grills Cafe & Hangout
Happy Grills is a place I hadn't heard of until I started searching for the go to spots in Kansas City. With good reviews and an appetizing breakfast menu, I'm excited to try this place out.

City Hall Observation Deck- Free admission
What better way to start our 12 day "tour" of Kansas City than by overlooking the scenic downtown area at City Hall's Observation Deck. In the heart of downtown KC on 12th street, it's a great way to take in the scenes.

Kansas City Public Library- Free admission
The Kansas City Public Library is rich in history and architecture and I'm excited to take my kids for an early afternoon of learning. The library frequently hosts events for children and I can't wait to take advantage of one of them. Best of all- it's completely free.

Lunch: Zaina
Zaina's Mediterranean restaurant comes highly recommended for their good food and inexpensive pricing. It's also within close proximity of the other events we have planned for the day, which is an added bonus.

Day #2: Coffee, Crime, and Luxury

Roasterie Tour- Free admission
The Roasterie in Kansas City offers free hour long tours which highlight the coffee making process from cupping, roasting, blending, and decaffeinating the beverage. I figure it's a great way to start the morning on day two.

"They're Not Going To Get Me: Crime In the 1930's"- Free admission
I'm excited to learn about the rise and fall of bank robbers and Gangsters in the 1930s with free admission to "They're Not Going to Get Me" in downtown Kansas City.

Lunch Reservation: The American Restaurant
I can't think of a better way to honor Kansas City's history than by having lunch at The American Restaurant.

Day #3: Kauffman & Kemper

Picnic brunch: Kauffman Memorial Garden- Free admission
Kauffman Memorial Garden is a place I can't believe I haven't been yet. Apparently, it's breathtaking.

Kemper Museum- Free Admission
The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art offers free admission and is currently showcasing the "Personal Effects" exhibit.

Dinner Reservation: Starkers
I've heard a lot about Starkers, which is locally owned and operated. After the chef, John McClure, passed away in 2011, his family took over to carry on his tradition of purchasing local foods and offering an in season menu.

Day #4: A Royal Affair

Royals Game and "All Access Tour"

This is one of the things I'm most excited about during our Kansas City staycation. The Kansas City Royals offer a "Frank White Lounge Package" which includes a tour of the stadium, lounge tickets, an autographed baseball, autographed bat, cap, game notes, and a baseball insider.

Day #5- Friday Fun

Boulevard Brewing Company Tour- Free admission
We've done this before but it's always a lot of fun. The hour long tour gives you insider information to the brewing process and history of Boulevard Brewing Company before offering free samples on tap.

Dinner at Jack Stack BBQ
Jack Stack is one of those KC staples that I always recommend to tourists. Since the metro area is known for it's barbecue, I thought this might be a fun way to celebrate the day.

First Fridays- Free admission
Frist Fridays is a free event that takes place every Friday throughout the year and showcases art in downtown KC.

Day #6- Legends

Afternoon at DeAnna Rose Farmstead- Cost $2.00 per adult
I've heard really good things about the Farmstead and think it would be a great teaching experience for my daughter.

Dinner: Louisiana Jazz Kitchen

Live At the Legends- Free admission
The Legends at Village West, in Kansas City, KS, offers free music every Saturday during the summer. This should give our family some time to relax and enjoy the nice evening weather.

Day #7- City Fun

City Market - Farmer's Market - Free admission
The Farmer's Market is open year round until 3:00pm and offers locally grown produce and goods in addition to live music in a family friendly atmosphere.

Lunch: Vietnam Cafe

Nelson Atkins Museum of Art- Free admission

Day #8- Nature Lovers

Lakeside Nature Center- Free admission
We're planning a family day of frisbee throwing and picnics at the Lakeside Nature Center, off of Gregory in Kansas City, Missouri. The best part about this is that it's free.

Family Picnic

Day #9- Union Station & The Theater

Union Station- Free admission

Lunch: Crayola Cafe (Crown Center)

Coterie Theater (Crown Center)

Day #10- So Much Fun

Worlds Of Fun / Oceans of Fun

Worlds of Fun is easy to get to whether by car, plane, or train! The park is located northeast of downtown Kansas City off Interstate 435, an easy drive from cities such as Des Moines, Omaha, Lincoln, and St. Louis. In fact, with our Midwest location, we're only a few hours from just about anywhere!

Day #11- Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo
The Kansas City Zoo, a private non-profit organization governed by Friends of the Zoo, is operated in agreement with the Kansas City, MO Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, partially funded by the Zoological District and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Day #12: Kansas City Wrap Up

Kansas City Museum

Dinner at Hereford House

Kansas City Limo Tour
I'm thrilled to wrap up our stay-cation with a tour of the metro! My husband agreed to get a sitter and hire a Kansas City limousine service to take us around the metro area for a tour. Exciting and romantic. I can't wait!
