This is one of the historic garden cemeteries I have visited.

Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland CA

When you enter the gates of this cemetery, you will see a bell with a plaque in the middle of a circular road. The inscription reads:

This historic bell which tolled through the decades the passing of each funeral through the gates of Mountain View Cemetery is placed here as a memorial to the pioneers and leaders who rest within these grounds and who contributed to the development of California and the West.

The W.T. Garret Brass and Bell Foundry was located on Folsom Street at Fremont Street in San Francisco, CA.

Mountain View Cemetery in Piedmont is a 226 acre garden cemetery designed by Fredrick Olmstead, the architect who designed Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and Central Park in New York City. The Cemetery was founded in 1863.

Famous Californians Buried in this Cemetery

The Main Mausoleum contains the remains of Henry J. Kaiser (1882-1967) Kaiser Steel, famous for the World War Two liberty ships, Hoover Dam, Grand Coulee Dam and Kaiser Permanente Health Plan.

Warren Bechtel (1872-1933 The founder of Bechtel Systems and his son Warren Bechtel (1872-1989).

Senator William F. Knowland (1908-1974) The publisher of the Oakland Tribune.

Dr. John Marsh (1799-1856) and Alice Marsh Cameron are buried here. D5r. Marsh was the first US doctor in California.

David Hewes (1822-1915) Is know for providing the "Golden Spike" in Promontory Point, Utah in 1869. A member of the "big four" Charles Crocker is interred in a large mausoleum.

Francis "Borax" Smith (1846-1931) built the Claremont Hotel and is famous for the Twenty Mule Team.

James Folger (1837-1899) Folger's Coffee.

Moses Chase (1806-1891) The first settler in the East Bay.

Senator William S. Gwin (1805-1885) His crypt is designed as an Egyptian pyramid.

Washington Bartlett (1824-1887), Romualdo Pacheco (1831=1899), George C. Pardee (1857-1941) and George C. Perkins (1839-1923) were governors of California.

Mountain View Cemetery is located at 5000 Piedmont Ave.

Fascinating post. Old cemeteries are a treasure house of untold things.
