A Flight Journey vs A Train Journey: Sea apart!

A Train Journey is so different from a flight! I realized it quite recently when I had a train journey after a long gap of 6/7 years(apart from some local rides) and had been flying in between. Some interesting observations.

Journey through Flight: Quite smooth

Yes, I have faced high turbulence on some flights(Had dizziness on a few occasions when I flew). The food at times tasted too much of preserved food, and cooling quite high. Yet, the fact that one can reach Thousands of miles in a few hours makes flight perfect for many. It saves time, though cost is a big factor. Some positive factors that I can think of for a flight are:

  • The savings in time makes Flight a better option for most of the Work and Business purposes. A longer train journey can take up more time.
  • Some Airlines offer Flymiles and one can use accumulated points for some good stuff- though I have personally never used Airmiles(or Flymiles).
  • Overall cleanliness is better in planes as compared to the Trains I have been in, though Trains are catching up.

Also, the Airports are swanky, and one feels quite luxurious walking in them. Some people even pay extra to get a flight rather than a train journey to get such an experience.

Train Journey: An unmatched experience by itself

Yes, flights have their own value, and offer time savings. Yet, there are aspects of a Train Journey, that one misses on the flights:

  • Often Sleeper class and even Second AC journey in trains can be at half or even one-third of the cost of a flight- meaning savings for those with tighter budgets.
  • The countryside views that one can watch in a train journey(and Mountains and seas at distance) makes for an unforgettable ride. A Flight can hardly get that experience. In fact, it is said that one of the best ways to explore a country is through a Rail Journey.
  • One can try out different foods, Teas etc. at different stalls. Having Tea at a train station early in the morning is also a unique experience.
  • One also gets to talk to people from different walks of life, and often from a different culture and with much more time than what one gets in a flight.

The Trains do need to improve on their cleanliness, though they are working on that with urgency.

So what is better- it is your personal choice!

Overall, a Flight and a Train Journey are quite wide apart, and we cannot really compare these two. Go for a Flight if you have to save on time, and have Business meetings, or traveling to a place across the continents. Yet if you want to see countryside and explore different cultures within a country, go for the Train journey.

I agree on the points, Ptrikha - each has own plus and minus. I have not taken a train journey for years, meaning long and overnight journeys. But I take daily train journeys for work - siva

Hi Siva, You might have had taken Train Journeys when you were in India? Any memories?

I remember train journeys powered by steam engines fueled by coal and I used to be covered by black soot dust! Now they are phased out thankfully by cleaner fuels like diesel and electricity. I have been avoiding overnight journeys for years - siva

When time is important I fly. However, I love long train rides and hope to do one in Australia within the next year or so - I'm saving!
