Intro

Many say that when you step foot on Zakynthos island, you never want to go back. The island belongs to the Ionian group of islands and it’s the third largest one. Tourism is very developed thanks to the beautiful beaches, magnificent landscape and a variety of sites that make this place irresistible.

The climate is Mediterranean, which means hot summers and mild winters provide thick vegetation to a lovely green landscape. Everyone wants to visit the romantic land of wine protected by Dionysius, but if you are traveling with kids, Caretta-Caretta turtles and boat excursions are just the right attraction for the little ones.

The influence from Venice still embellishes the island architecture and can be felt in the cuisine and dialect. However, only a couple of old buildings remained preserved after a few devastating earthquakes. Today, there are over 30 sites available for tourist, the most attractive of which are listed below.

Zakynthos Town

Vacation accommodation in Zakynthos is occupied with many visitors coming to enjoy the weather from May to September. The capital of Zakynthos is a delight to explore by taking a walk on paved squares and streets brimming with cafés, local markets, sweet shops, jewelry stores and boutiques. The town is busy and reminiscent of the towns of the Venetian and Byzantine eras.

There are plenty of museums, local arts on the corners and the town’s stunning main church dedicated to saint Agios Dionysios. In a village of Bohali, 2.5 kilometers away from the town, one can take a peek at a ruined Venetian castle located in the park. Although it’s in poor condition due to the earthquakes, you can still see the remains of the Venetian symbol – the main gate or the Lion of St. Mark.

Porto Limnionas

To get to the amazing and hidden wild lagoon, you have to pass through the mountains and follow the signs. This trip is worth it for those who want to sunbathe and enjoy the emerald green waters. There are not many tourist facilities, so it’s really private.

Nevertheless, there is a tavern with breathtaking views and traditional Greek cuisine.
The owners of the tavern produce their own olive oil and wine, which gives this place a special flare. With only 3km away from the Porto Limnionas is the Porto Roxa. A small bay with a gorgeous view on the coast is ideal for a boat trip.

Anafonitria Monastery

The 15th century Byzantine monastery is located in a small village 25 kilometers away from Zakynthos. The monastery was built in the name of the Virgin Mary and has interesting architecture. There are several buildings forming the monastery built in the 15th century under the Venetian occupation. The entrance presents a square-shaped defensive tower. In the center of the complex is the main church with historical frescoes that are five centuries old.

Keri Lake

A few buildings survived the 1953 earthquake among which are the houses of the Keri village. The village is on the top of the hill overlooking the Ionian Sea and offering the perfect combination of the sea, pine forests, streams and valleys. Down the hill from the village are the harbor, restaurants, cafes and a charming beach. One can also enjoy the homemade coffee and view on the Myzithres – large rocky formations in the sea.

Gerakas

One of the most beautiful and famous southern beaches is Gerakas. There are a lot of vacancies and hotels inviting tourist to this marvelous golden and sandy beach. The place has a natural glory, as the locals are invested in maintaining the natural beauty.

Since too many people pulled off the clay, they closed the final part of the beach due to safety risks. Gerakas is a hatching place for turtles and access to the area is restricted from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after dawn.

Marathonisi

Catch a boat from Kari and explore the next island. Marathonisi or the Turtle Island is known for the famous Caretta Caretta turtles. The island is actually shaped like a turtle, which inspired the ancient legends saying that it was carved in honor of the green visitors. Tourists can explore the deep waters surrounding it and appreciate the free and uninhibited nature.

Visit and experience the unique beauty and magic of Zakynthos. Whether you travel alone or with loved ones, it’s a trip that enriches all visitors. But be careful, once you go there you might not want to leave.
