5 top things to do in Australia during the holidays

Are you planning on taking a trip this holiday season? You may want to plan on visiting Australia! It is one of the warmest places in the world, so it can be a great place to escape the brutal winters most of us have to deal with every year.

While traveling to Australia can be exciting, it can also be a bit overwhelming visiting such a unique country for the first time. You won’t be able to go snowboarding, build a snowman or do a lot of the other things that you normally like to do. Fortunately, there are plenty of other great activities that you can enjoy.

1. Try Surfing

Have you ever been surfing before? Australia is the perfect place to try it out!

Many natives argue that it’s best to go surfing between March and May. This is technically when the tides are best. However, it is also when the beaches are crowded with tourists. If you don’t want to deal with the crowds, then you may want to go surfing during your Christmas break!

A couple commenters from Global Surfers have provided some recommendations for people visiting Australia for the first time.

“This period is early season prime time for Queensland and northern NSW. You can expect excellent surf in warm water in hundreds of good spots between, say, Coffs Harbour and Noosa.”

2. Go to an Opera House

You can’t celebrate the holidays without listening to beautiful music. There are plenty of great opera houses in Australia, which provide native music around Christmastime.
If you are in New South Wales, you may want to check out the Sydney Opera House. This is rated as one of the three best things to do in Australia by Trip Advisor, which is pretty impressive, since the city is such a popular tourist destination.

You can check out their website to see what Christmas events they have going on. These include the Bach Christmas Oratorio, which was just held earlier this week. Here is a brief description of the event from their website.

“The last time the ACO performed Bach’s Christmas Oratorio critics, audiences and the Orchestra themselves considered it the concert of the year. Bach’s monumental and colorful work was composed in 1733/34 and was written for each of the six major feast days of the Christmas period. It’s the quintessential Christmas choral extravaganza.”

3. Hike the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains are among the many wonders of Australia. It is a beautiful chain of mountains that stretches across New South Wales.

The Blue Mountains have been listed on the 15 World Heritage destinations for the past decade. You can visit them any time of the year, so why not explore them during your holiday vacation?

There are a number of maps placed along the trails. You can also check in with a guide to get advice for your trip.

There are a few things that you will want to look out for while hiking the Blue Mountains. The Three Sisters is one of the most famous landmarks. It is a unique rock formation that is less than three kilometers from the Great Western Highway.

4. Find a Hotel with Decent Amenities

Sometimes, you just want to relax. You may want to look for a hotel with plenty of accommodations. Since Australia is such a popular tourist country, there are lots of great hotels all over the country. Look for one that provides:

• WiFi to watch your favorite Christmas specials (you may need a VPN to access geo-restricted content like NetFlix or HBO Now)
• Plenty of room to unwrap Christmas gifts
• A pool
• A recreational room

You should be able to enjoy your time without having to leave the building.

5. Explore Australia’s Beautiful National Parks

Australia is home to some of the world’s most beautiful national parks. You may want to explore some of them during your trip.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park should be at the top of your list. Here are some reasons to check it out:

• You can gaze at over 3,000 coral reefs.
• You can visit over 300 different islands.
• You can go on a boat trip and see some of the most exotic sea creatures in the world, including 215 species of birds and the ominous Great White Shark (don’t worry – you can watch it safely from the boat if you cross paths with it!).

The national parks are open all year and are happy to accommodate you around the holidays.
