Our honeymoon in Cape Town was spent at Derwent House Boutique Hotel, a small but perfectly formed hotel in the heart of the classy Tamboerskloof area.

The hotel

There are so many good things about Derwent House I'm not sure where to start. I could begin with our room - classy decor, plump towels and robes, DVD player and a private outdoor hot tub with candles. Or maybe the pool, clean as a whistle with loungers where were you can gaze up at Table Mountain.

I could rave about the kitchen, a home from home with tea, coffee, freshly baked biscuits and cakes, port and sherry - all free - and a well stocked honesty fridge with everything from soft drinks, local beers and wine to the best champagne.

Perhaps the service should be the thing I start with, with staff happy to recommend and book restaurants, a free laundry service, a well stocked DVD library, hand written daily updates on weather, secure off road parking... I could go on.

You've probably guessed we loved Derwent House, and you'd be correct.

A word about Carol & Jo

The two British owners, Carol & Jo, are the secret to this place. Not only have they created a funky, relaxed environment with loads of nice touches, they also find time to chat to each and every guest offering advice, hints and tips about getting the best out of Cape Town.

They both obviously love the area and - unlike some of the locals - are really positive and unbeat about the place. As with many tourists, we had some concerns about safety, but we were surpised how safe we felt in Cape Town. Carol confirmed our thoughts that if you take a few simple precautions you can avoid problems - the same as any big city.

Cape Town and the surrounding area has so much to offer, and Derwent House is the perfect base from which to explore.
