Tiger Tourism Destinations

I saw my first tigress in Kanha National Park and a male tiger in Bandhavgarh National Park. This was in the seventies and these wildlife destinations had come under the umbrella of protected areas.

The conservation efforts has started to deliver results and the big cats were flourishing in the reserves. I caught the tiger bug and subsequently more trips where organized. My first trip to Corbett did not fetch the tiger but any way it is one of the finest tiger reserve in country for birding and animal watching.

I began visiting Kanha and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve regularly for birding and wildlife photography. In the seventies there were hardly any tourists and we could spend lot of time in the reserve due to long timings and enjoyed many elephant rides. We spent lot of time with the forest department people who used to spend most of their time in isolation.

Long time on elephant back gave us ample opportunity to capture good images using a simple camera. In the eighties the tourists started arriving in larger numbers. We could sense alienation from the regulars we used to spend time with. In short time the profile of the parks changed and they became a major tourism destination.

Sensing good business a large number of resorts were established one by one. The tiger tourism had come to the age. Pench National Park came into the picture much later but nonetheless it is in league with Kanha and Bandhavgarh now.

Tourism had to be controlled in form and manner by restricting access to limited number of vehicles in the park. This was followed by creating different zones in order to divide vehicular traffic in the park. The jeep safaris in the National Parks are an organized affair and one has to pay for the entry and jeep on hire. The park bookings should be done in advance at MP Online Portal. This assures of visit inside the forest in case of unprecedented rush.

The prime purpose of visits to these reserves was tiger safari for trekking tigers. Bandhavgarh and Kanha have the largest number of visitors followed by Pench Tiger Reserve.

The reserve have much more to offer besides fabulous tiger sightings. The sightings of wild animals on jeep safaris are superb and thrilling. The parks are the best for birding in India. The best bird tours in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve are organized in winters. The bird tours to Kanha and Pench are also organized by the MP tour operators.

Best season is anytime the parks are open, but winter suits the visitors the most. For wildlife photographers post winter period offers best game sightings and lot of natural light in the dense canopy.
