It is the greatest sightseeing area in Toyama Prefecture where you can fully enjoy nature and see the unique 20 meters steep banks of accumulated snow.

Tateyama Mountain Range

Mount Tateyama is one of the most gorgeous snow-capped mountains.
It is also considered to be one of the sacred mountains in Japan along with Mt. Fuji and Mount Hakusan. It has been deemed as a holy site for worshipers since the Heian era. People believed that they would see the spirits of the dead when they reach the Jigokudani "Hell's Valley" where clouds of steam, hot water and volcanic gas are given off from the snowy surface.
At present, the mountain is popular to mountain climbers to enjoy the magnificent scenery of nature. It has abundant mountain flora and fauna. Throughout the year, the mountain serves as a natural dam that provides plenty of clean water. The water from the mountain is used for the purpose of generating electricity and supports people's lives and industries.

Jigokudani "Hell's Valley"

People called Jigokudani Hell's Valley because they could see the spectacle that looks like the hell that steep cliff, spring out boiling water from the surface of the earth.
It is a volcano crater made about 10,000 years ago that is constantly smoking.
The valley itself has numerous holes that are constantly releasing volcanic gas and hot water that is pumped to the hotels and hot springs that fill the town of Noboribetsu.
But this place is a paradise for snow monkeys.

Jigokudani Monkey Park

Jigokudani Monkey Park is the place where the world's famous snow monkeys can be seen.
It is located in the valley of Yokoyu River downstream Shiga Kogen area of the northern part of Nagano Prefecture. At the elevation of 850 meters, snow covers the ground for one-third of the year.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a 3,000-meter mountain range route from Toyama City to Shinano-Omachi in Nagano Prefecture, passing through the Tateyama mountain range and the Ushiro-Tateyama mountain range of the North Alps. It was completed in 1971. The route was carefully built so that the surrounding environment is not damaged. The route goes through Tateyama in the Hida Mountains with a lot of scenic sites, including Kurobe dam. The section between Kurobe Dam and Ōgisawa was originally made for construction of the dam, while the section between Tateyama and Kurobeko was for tourists. There are varied transportation systems that visitors travel across Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, from Tateyama in Toyoma prefecture to Shinano Omachi in Nagano prefecture: Toyama Local Train, Tateyama Cable Car, Tateyama Highland Bus, Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus, Tateyama Ropeway, Kurobe Cable Car, Kanden Trolley Bus, and Local Bus.
It is called the roof of Japan. It is the greatest sightseeing area in Toyama Prefecture where you can fully enjoy magnificent scenery and savor fresh air.
The 20 meter high snow wall in Murodo is a highlight during spring, while the alpine flowers and autumn colors attract hikers during the summer and autumn.

Gigantic Snow Wall

The gigantic snow wall is called "Yuki no Otani". It's about 20 meters. It is open from April to June. Visitors can walk through to see its magnificence.

Home of alpine flowers

In summer, mountains are draped with garlands of colored leaves. It is a time of dazzling beauty, with streaks of red, orange, yellow and gold. In Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Routes, colored leaves can be enjoyed for about one month from late September to late October at any spot such as Midagahara, Daikanbo, Murodo, and Kurobe Dam.
