Know more about Rohtang Pass (World's Highest Jeep Able Road) the highest mountain passes in the world and the favorite highlight of Himachal Pradesh Tourism (India). It will be your favorite destination if want want to touch and feel the snow.

Rohtang Pass (Honeymooners Place)

Manali is specially known for its world famous tourist place called Rohtang pass (Also known as Honeymooners place).

Rohtang pass is located at an altitude of 13055 feet (3979 m) and the distance is 51kms from Manali on highway to Keylong / Leh. It offers a panorama and spectacular.

Our Visit to Rohtang Pass

It is a gateway to Lahaul Spiti, Pangi. There are a beautiful sight of glaciers, peaks and Chandra river flows down in the Lahaul valley.

Almost every visitor to Manali yearns to visit Rohtang Pass as one can feel and touch snow even in the peak of summer on this pass. We awaited this soul stirring trip from previous night onwards. Only jeeps and cars can reach the mountainous peak. Our group hired five jeeps and proceeded in the early morning to Rohtang pass. On the way we hired gum boots, dangri, heavy woolen clothes - jacket, gloves

How We Reached?

Traffic jams are common occurrences caused by the inability of military vehicles, trucks, and goods carriers to navigate the tight roads and rough terrain, compounded by, snow / ice at certain points and the large number of tourists vehicles.

On the way we stopped at many places, each offering wonderful view of nature & each one different. Kothi, a picturesque spot, is situated on the road to Rohtang pass. It is 12 km away from Manali. Large number of films (movies) have been picturised at this place. Rahala water falls is just 16 kms from Manali. If one goes to Marhi on foot from Kothi from the old road, the sight of the falls is fascinating. It is a good picnic spot as well.

The road is very narrow near the Rohtang pass and the parking of vehicles is very difficult and one has to be very alert while parking the vehicles because slight distraction may be hazardous.

Rohtang Pass - Snow Point

On the southern face of this pass there is a spot called Bias Kund which is the the origin of river Bias.

Walking from the parking area to the snow point is not a big problem but not advisable for elderly persons or small kids. It can be a 15 to 30 minutes walk depending on the traffic. The safest and the easiest way to reach the snow point is by horse ride but it is a bit costly ride, but elderly and the small children can comfortably use this service. The horse man charges around Indian Rupees 400 per trip ( both ways ) per horse. Tourists plan their trip in early hours to reach Rohtang very early to avoid traffic and reach at the snow point, at the same time it is equally difficult to return as all vehicles way down as to be clear the road. The weather here is highly unpredictable and it does not take much time for the bright sun shine to change over to moderate to heavy snow fall. So going early mean returning late from there. All types of food stuff, coffee and drinks are available at Rohtang pass and these are sold by local people.

The main attraction for tourist at Rohtang pass is snow and the scenic beauty of the area. At the top of the Pass the air seems to glitter against the snow. Covered by mountains, glaciers and rivers the long stretch of Rohtang pass provides an excellent venue for the adventurous sports.

I still remember when I reached Rohtang Pass, but we had to come back because my colleague got sick in the extreme cold conditions there. The road is very dangerous. Hats off to the driver who took us back at the right time to our hotel. Good guide shared by you.
