Elephants have been used in India for ages. These have been captured from the wild and trained by mahouts or the elephant riders. The art of capturing and training wild tuskers has been developed in India from where it has reached many Asian countries.
In early days these pachyderms where used for labor as well as for collecting alms. They were sold to the Royal House holds to be used as vehicles of war. Thousands of these animals were used during the war by the Moghuls in India. They have been used as circus animals all over the World. The versatility of these animals made them very useful to the human society.
The ability to understand human communications show how intelligent creatures the elephants are. They develop a strong rapport with the mahouts and their families with them. The bondage is for ever, elephants are supposed to live for hundred year.
The capture and training of wild elephants is a rigorous exercise. Most of the activities are taking place in the states of Kerala and Assam. The Indian elephant are trained since infancy or when young. It is difficult to train or capture adult elephant.
Nowadays the elephants are used in tourism by major hotels and resorts. They are also used in tiger reserves for rides to show tigers in the wild. The tamed elephant safaris in Corbett are well known for tiger trekking in India. The animal ride offers an exotic experience to the foreign tourists in the parks.
