Ca ed Balos..A Fabulous Bio-Sustainable Winery in Piemonte, Italy
Italy is a wonderful country full of the pleasures life can offer. Wine, food, scenery, culture they all add up to make this piece of interest. It also details one very special winery in Low Piedmont where the family who make the Moscato wines are featured.
One of the wonderful things about writing about wine is one gets to meet some of the people who are instrumental in producing this nectar of the gods.
I was invited to the VINO 2011 by the Italian Trade Commission that took place in January 2011 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. There were hundreds of vintners from all over Italy, some producing wine as it has always been, authentic and true to the age old way.
Many of the winemakers there however are now adding grape varietals to the detriment of their product. Mostly Chardonnay grapes to the whites and Merlot to the reds. Of course this measure is taken so that distributors from the USA will be able to sell their products to folk in America many who really are not very well versed in anything except Pinot Grigio. It would probably be totally over most of their heads if someone told them about Primitivo, Greco, Sagrantino, Garganega to name a few of the fabulous grapes grown in the country of wine, Italy.
Finding Renata Bonacina
So I came into the grand tasting room at the hotel and waited for my inner guide to take me where I should be and there with a big smile on her face was Renata Bonacina of Ca ed Balos in Piemonte.
She and her family live in a marvellous aged farmstead located in Castiglione Tinella which is the core zone for the production of Moscato di Asti. Only in quite recent years did Renata and her husband decide to move to the countryside and start growing grapes and producing luscious wines.
An important item for me was that there are no herbicides used and an advanced system to reduce the use of water makes this Bio –Sustainable agriculture at its best.…an interesting fact is that this area of the Low Piemonte was covered by sea thirty years ago and many fossils of plants, shells and fish skeletons have been found in the light pale tufa that covers the land.
The Wines of Ca Ed Balos
This is a big adventure for Renata and also a way to express the passion and respect she has for nature and Mother Earth. Her wines are of the best quality and the drawing of the Balos on their Moscato label is the symbol of their winery. It is a lightly sparkling wine with yellow straw colours reflecting greenish tints. The lovely aromas of flowers, apple and orange, are representative of this dry fresh wine with its minerally and bitterish after taste. A wonderful choice for all to enjoy.
Recently I was told that these Moscato wines are selling very well in the USA...so do ask for them when you go to buy wine next time.....They were featured on a recent front page of Wine Enthusiast whose website will be featuring the wines of Ca ed Balos.
The video is of a neighbouring winemaker Caudrina by name.
A lovely part of Italy...Piemonte
You may be asking why this is a travel piece well I could not fine a wine page..and for me a visit to Italy is always one of the great pleasures in life. The food, the historic places to visit, the beautiful countryside, the fascinating culture, the WINE, the people both men and women so interesting to talk with.
Bellagio is part of the Piemonte and the lovely lakes of Como and Garda ringed with mountains. The deep blue waters of the lakes contrasting with the snow tipped Alps. The fabulous palazzos and hotels where staying is a pleasure...to wake up to the aroma of freshly brewed capuccino. To look forward to delicious pastas and risottos for lunch and dinner and wine, glorious wine with all.
Oh well I too can dream but will do more than that, will set up my next trip to stay at the Ca ed Balos winery...
