Birmingham in bloom -The Floral Trail Summer 2010 - A Review
In the Summer of 2010 I was looking for a cheap weekend break for my husband and myself to escape the house teenagers. The usual money restraints automatically disqualified the usual choices of coastal towns so we chose the Industrial city of Birmingham.
This was not as strange a choice as some would think as it holds wonderful memories for me of childhood Christmas shopping trips. My husband also purchased my engagement ring from the World Famous Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham and we had a special friend we wanted to visit.
We booked our train tickets well in advance and so too the room. The room was the budget price of £29 a night from a well known hotel/lodge chain.
The surprise awaiting The Visitor is this Gnomeland?
On arrival in Birmingham we were stunned at the fantastic floral displays that were in open spaces, in hanging baskets, outside shops and restaurants. We soon discovered through notice boards and information spread across the city that Birmingham was IN BLOOM and that a FLORAL TRAIL had been designed so that people could see the myriad of colours that would make any gardener proud.
This city has always been known for its' friendly people who love to chat and this reputation was not unfounded as busy council workforce were all ready and willing to answer questions about this Floral extravaganza. Now i wish to confess to being a gnome lover and made it my mission to buy a gnome to put in my photos (how can you have a garden without a Gnome?. He appears in his natural state as bartered for from a willing cell-phone market stall holder and is named Toby.

The Birmingham Floral Trail is just that and will lead you past breath-taking displays both bright and clever (like that of the WW2 Spitfire plane ) created in honour and remembrance celebration of the 70th ANNIVERSARY of the BATTLE of BRITAIN).
Named a double winner at the 'Heart Of England In Bloom' Awards I urge anyone who loves the idea of mixing great Shopping with eye-catching and uplifting flower displays to look into visiting this once run down city that has moved into the 21st Century with flare and gusto. Now it can hold up its' head once more with pride to match the heady heights of its' grand buildings. If you are looking for that European style and yet friendly Britishness with a mix of worldwide culture then Birmingham is the place for you.
