Leaving England and traveling to Norway via ferry was a wonderful way to travel. Upon getting off the ferry in Bergen, I truly felt like I was in Europe. New language, new street signs, new trolly signs, new everything.
Bergen - Entrance to the Fjords
Traveling by ferry from England to Bergen, Norway is a wonderful trip. After getting off the ferry, you know you are in Europe! New language, new road signs, new trolly signs, new everything.
We arrived at night and walked to our youth hostel in the dark. A beautiful, clean double room awaited us with a lovely comforter on the bed. We quickly were under the comforter and sound asleep. We awoke to find the sun streaming into our window and I jumped out of bed to look out. I was astonished to find that we were right on a small fjord. Such beautiful views! Breakfast was absolutely wonderful with meats, cheeses, coffee, fish, fresh bread and rolls. I felt like I died and went to heaven after the awful breakfasts served in England. I loved it. We took a hike around the small fjord that day and caught a ride back with a fisherman. I still have his pic in my memory book and hope that I gave him a tip for the ride.
Bergen has Viking ship museum where part of a ship is maintained in a climate-controlled building. You walk on wooden galleys over the ship and view it from above. The ship is in water to preserve it. It's quite a sight and not to be missed. Outside the museum is a large park where, on May Day, you can join others in dancing around the May Pole. We just happen to be there on May Day and joined in the fun. I have a pic of a beautiful little blonde-haired boy who danced with me. Such fun!
Bergen also has a finicular - a cable car that take you to the top of the mountain for spectacular views of Bergen and beyond. This is a must do in Bergen!
From Bergen we traveled up the fjords to Trondheim. The scenery along these fjords is so beautiful - words can hardly describe the scenery. It's definitely a trip not to be missed.
I would definitely ask that you make Bergen a special trip of your own. Whether traveling in first-class or on a budget, there is something for each of you in Bergen.
